Domains of Wonder: Selected Masterworks of Indian Painting.
Dallas Museum of Art in Dallas, Texas.

This exhibition includes two very rare 17th century Indian marbled miniature paintings drawn from the collection of the late Edwin Binney 3rd, on loan from the San Diego Museum of Art. Two works entitled “A Lady Praying at a Shrine” and "A Seated Dervish" will be displayed in a section devoted to works from the Deccan region in south-central India. Catalog available.

Up until the 1970's, it was the prevailing belief that such paintings were cut paper découpage. The late master marbler Christopher Weimann theorized that such paintings were made using a sequential combination of cut papers stencils. He also thought that some works, such as the Lady Praying at a Shrine, utilized an additional application of gum resist. Using these methods, Weimann successfully reproduced several works from Binney’s collection. Subsequently and with Binney's approval, Weimann participated in an analytical study of paintings from Binney's collection, which was performed at the Los Angles County Museum of Art Conservation laboratory. Shortly before his untimely death in 1988, results from this study proved Weimann's theory.

Galen will then teach you the technique of a number of standard patterns including the Feather, French Curl, Peacock, Stone Marble, Italian Vein, Ripple, and Nonpareil. Each person will have their own marbling tray and will marble 9.5 x 12 .5 sheets of paper. Also, fabric marbling will be introduced and practiced.

In the advanced session, students will learn several more patterns including the Thistle, Fantasy, Moire, Antique Spot, and Spanish Wave, as well as the techniques of Overmarbling and Marking. Each person will also get to marble a sheet or two in a large tray, making a standard 19 x 25 sheet of paper. There will be time towards the end of the day for some individual experimentation. If students take both classes, they will have learned all the important aspects of marbling and with practice, know enough to produce professional quality work, both on paper and cloth. Those who take only the second class must have some past marbling experience. You can take both classes if you wish, or just one day. If you have already had some marbling experience you can take just the second day. Tuition for each session: Class Fee: $95 — Materials Fee: $25
