Troublingshooting questions

Hi,

I am relatively new to marbling and am marbling silk scarves. One issue I am having is my color spreading too much and thus turning out very pale. All of the dyes are extremely thin out of the bottle. What would be recommended as a thickener? As well, there are times when the dyes seem to break apart when on the size. Does anyone know what causes this and how to prevent it?

Thank you for any help.

I use Galen Berry's paints, https://marbleart.us/, for marbling on silk scarves. The only way to thicken the paint is to add more pigment in my experience. I also use Utrecht paints thinned with distilled water, which also works well. What are you using to mix your carrageenan? Often the minerals in our hard water cause problems or at least some interesting variations. I use distilled water when mixing my carrageenan for my classes, as I want my students to have dependable results, especially when just starting our with marbling.
