Golden Fluid Acrylics
Most pigments sold in art/craft stores are intended to be used for painting. They are not made for marbling, and all need some management to become useful in the marbling process. To avoid some of this bother, purchase pigments made for marbling, by reputable marbling practitioners. Each of these la...

Re: favorite papers
Another paper I like is kozuke paper from Japanese Paper Place. Japanese Paper Place is a wholesale business, but their website has very exact information, and lists of their retail vendors all over the world This paper is 30% kozo (mulberry) and 70% sulfite, machine made. There is a very very faint...

in reply to hhumler: I have heard from others who were satisfied with Dick Blick drawing paper at first, but found the quality changed. The presence or absence of calcium carbonate seems to one big issue. I believe, but do not know for sure, that some sellers, like Dick Blick, buy large amounts of p...

One paper I like is Riverside heavyweight construction paper..... 100% sulfite, "eggshell" finish, one side smoother, 70 to 80 gsm Distributed by Pacon, sold in packs of 50 sheets 12" x 18", available through Dick Blick and some craft suppliers. This paper is just heavy enough to...

I marble with acrylic pigments on a methylcellulose vat. What papers do you like to work on? What paper do you use for everyday and experimenting? What paper do you use for "good" prints? If possible, please relate name of paper/manufacturer, composition, grams/square inch (GSM). Have you ...

Re: Grainy paints / What do you use?
I use mostly Golden Fluid Acrylics and Jacquard Air Brush colors, on a methylcel vat. I have noticed that black slides off easier than other colors, also red. I assume it is a characteristic of those particular colors. Each color is a tiny bit different chemically. I mix Jacquard Air Brush black wit...

Re: Regarding allum.
Alum solution, when it dries, leaves a very fine crystalline powder behind. This is normal. The whole point of putting alum solution on the paper is to get a very fine layer of tiny crystals deposited there. The alum kind of grabs the pigment and holds on to it. As you have probably found, the pigme...

Re: Are the 'off-the-shelf' marbling inks any good or are they snake oil?
Some are OK, some not. Sorry to say, differences in water, conditions, types of size, etc. make every studio situation a bit of a mystery.....and definitely, one type of marbling ink does not fit all. You just have to try stuff. Most of the ones I have tried float too well. But I have no way of tell...

Re: If I am adding several layers on top of my marbling, do I need to re-apply allum?
Yes, I would do the acrylic layer last. Some other artists are able to do several layers of acrylic. It might be a combination of the paper and the brand of acrylic. I have done pieces with the first layer of acrylic thinned a lot, so it didn't cover the paper fibers completely. The second layer stu...

Re: methocellulose, carrageenan and ammonia.
Yes, it is necessary to use the ammonia with methylcellulose. Left overnight without the ammonia, the container appears to have a rubbery hockey puck at the bottom in the morning. When initially mixing the water and methocell, I stir until the solution is fairly clear (lots of stirring at first, the...
